Planning Commission

Purpose/Duties

The creation of the Planning Commission is called for under Section XIX E of the City Charter. Under the provisions of the Charter, the City Council is directed to appoint a City Planning Commission. The City Planning Commission shall have such powers and duties as are or may be conferred upon it by the general laws of the State of Ohio, and such powers as may be conferred upon it by Council, concerning the plan, design, location, removal, relocation, widening, extension and vacation of streets, parkways, playgrounds and other public places; the approval of plats for subdivision of land; and the zoning of the municipality for any lawful purpose. In addition, the Charter indicates that the Commission should constantly endeavor to formulate plans for the future physical development of the Municipality.

The City Charter provides that the Planning Commission shall be comprised of five (5) residents of the City, and that members will be appointed by Council with three (3) year staggered terms.

The Planning Commission in the course of its meetings considers a wide variety of current planning and long range or policy planning matters. Current planning matters include recommendations to rezone certain properties, Zoning Code text amendments, the approval of final subdivision plats, the consideration of site plans for buildings and building additions, requests for Conditional Use Permits, and various sign proposals. With respect to long range or policy planning, the Commission strives to maintain an updated Comprehensive Plan and implement that Plan, as well as contemporary zoning and design guidelines for development.
